FAQ

Question
Answer
Which connection methods are available?

There are four different methods to scan your ABB Low Voltage Devices:

  • Ekip Test & Programming (T&P) and Ekip Programming converters: Connect the converter to a USB port on the computer on one side and to the front connector on the device on the other side.
  • USB Type-C: Enables you to connect via an USB Type-C cable directly to your Sace Emax 3 device without the need of converters.
  • Serial Line: You need a serial line converter to convert the RS485 line (device side) to the line available on the computer and the communication protocol used is Modbus RTU.
  • Ethernet: Use the Ekip Communication module for the relevant network protocol (e.g. Ekip Com Modbus TCP/IP, Ekip Supply Evo Modbus TCP). To connect to the device, Ekip Connect must be connected to the same Ethernet network to which the device is connected.
I cannot connect to an ABB Low Voltage device.Make sure no other software is using the same COM port assigned to EKIP T&P and Ekip Programming converters. Applications such as terminal emulators, other device management tools, or communication software running in the background can experience conflicts with the port and prevent converters from establishing a connection. Close any unnecessary applications before starting the scanning.
Where can I find the communication interface for Modbus TCP/IP?For communication system interface maps, refer to the complete Modbus TCP/IP documentation and register maps at: https://library.abb.com/r?q=communication%20system%20interface
Can I use Ekip Connect offline?Yes. Many device-related activities can be performed without an internet connection, including selected configuration, monitoring and device interaction functions. An internet connection is required for services that depend on online content or cloud services, such as authentication, advanced permissions or accessing the ABB Digital store and activating upgrade licenses.
Do I need an ABB account to use Ekip Connect? No. You can explore Ekip Connect functions without logging in. However, signing in with your ABB account is highly recommended, as it allows you to access advanced device functionalities, reports and services that require authentication.
How can I stay updated on what's new in Ekip Connect? With every Ekip Connect update, the What's New section pups up on app opening to show the latest features and supported devices. You can also find the latest updates on the Ekip Connect User Manual. If there is something missing that would better support your work, share your feedback directly in the app.
What is the Digital Store, and how do I purchase and activate upgrades or licenses to unlock more features on ABB Low Voltage Devices?

Access available software upgrade licences for supported ABB Low Voltage Devices directly from Ekip Connect extend the device capabilities without additional hardware.

  • Purchase: Browse available upgrades in Ekip Connect and purchase them through the ABB Digital Store.
  • Redeem Code: Use a valid commercial Redeem Code in Ekip Connect to transfer the license to your profile.
  • Activate: Activate the purchased or redeemed upgrade directly on the connected device in Ekip Connect.
What is the difference between Ekip Connect and EPiC Mobile? (Should I use Ekip Connect or EPiC Mobile?)Use Ekip Connect when working from a PC and EPiC Mobile when working in the field from a smartphone or tablet. Both tools support configuration, commissioning and device interaction, but available functions can differ depending on the device and connection method.
Is it possible to determine the expected trip time directly within Ekip Connect software? No. Ekip Connect does not include an expected trip time calculation feature. The test results displayed by the software only indicate whether the measured tripping time falls within the acceptable range previously configured by the user. No independent expected trip time is calculated or shown.
How can I verify if my test results are correct without this feature?
Expected trip times can be determined using the following methods:
  • Curves Software – a free dedicated tool included in the e-Design platform, specifically designed to calculate expected trip times based on trip unit settings and injected current values
  • Manufacturer Catalogue Curves – reference the official protection curves published in the product documentation
  • Mathematical Formulas – apply the trip time formulas defined for the specific trip unit model
The calculated expected value can then be used as a reference to validate the test results obtained from Ekip Connect.
Where can I find the Curves software?Curves is available free of charge within the e-Design applications and software platform on the ABB website. A dedicated user manual (Curves_UserManual_EN.pdf) is available for download directly from the e-Design portal.
