Firmware Update

Description of the functionThe tool Firmware Update allows certain devices to be updated through the following ways described below.

fwupdateedit

PartDescription
A
Firmware Update, to update manually just one single module at a time. It allows the user to select the Firmware file locally.
B
System update, to update with a simplified and guided procedure multiple modules at a time. The Firware files can be downloaded here in the application.
CRecover update, to recover manually a corrupted module. It allows the user to select the Firmware file locally.

Firmware update security

Firmware updates to devices are critical for security and stability. Follow these security procedures for all firmware updates.

Role-Based Update Access

Firmware updates are restricted by user role for security: only users with appropriate MyABB role (Digital User and higher) can initiate firmware updates.

Pre-Update Security Checks

Before updating firmware, perform these security checks:

1. Verify Device Connectivity

☐ Device is connected and communicating

☐ Network path to device is stable

☐ No communication timeouts or errors

☐ Device is in safe operational state (not under load)

2. Verify Update Source

☐ Firmware downloaded from official library.abb.com only

☐ Firmware file integrity verified (MD5/SHA256 checksum if available)

☐ Update file size matches documented specification

☐ Update timestamp matches release notes

3. Environment Verification

☐ Ekip Connect application not running on other workstations

☐ Device network firewall configured to allow port 69/UDP (TFTP)

☐ No competing device access from other tools

☐ Sufficient disk space on workstation for update files

Digital Signature Verification

All firmware packages are digitally signed:

  • ABB Code Signing Service certificate validates authenticity
  • Digital signature checked before any installation begins
  • Tampered or unsigned firmware automatically rejected
  • Signature validation failure logged and prevents update

During Update Procedure

1. Do not interrupt the update process

2. Keep device powered and connected throughout update

3. Monitor update progress in Ekip Connect interface

4. Do not perform other operations while update in progress

5. Network connection must remain stable

Update Failure Recovery

If firmware update fails:

1. Check device status (may be in recovery mode)

2. Review Ekip Connect error log for failure reason

3. Attempt recovery using "Recover Update" option if available

4. Contact ABB Support if recovery fails

5. Do not power-cycle device during recovery (if possible)

Post-Update Verification

After successful firmware update:

1. Verify device responds to communication

2. Confirm firmware version matches intended release

3. Test basic device operations

4. Review device event log for any error conditions

5. Verify all configured parameters still intact
